Rice Magazine (formerly Sallyport) is the flagship magazine of Rice University. Published quarterly by the Office of Public Affairs, the magazine is mailed or delivered to approximately 60K readers, including alumni, parents of current undergraduate students, faculty, staff, donors and other key community constituents.

We feature Rice’s teaching, research, creative achievements and outreach through storytelling that is credible, creative and compelling.

Rice Magazine currently has two full-time staff members — an editor and an art director — dedicated to producing the magazine. A team of talented copyeditors, news and media staff, photographers and a videographer contribute ideas, content, fact-checking, visual stories and more.

Our feature well is almost 100-percent freelance written. We pay between .50 and $1/word for assigned stories.

What are we looking for? Well-reported and lively narratives that will appeal to an educated lay audience. We’re interested in stories about where we live as an institution and community — the complex and burgeoning city of Houston — as well as the world in which our students, faculty and alumni are living, working and making an impact.

Our feature section and several departments are open to freelancers.

We typically include three feature-length stories in which issue that cover research and creative activity; campus, teaching and student life; and community and alumni.

Got a service feature idea? Pitch it! We love profiles that shine with personality and detail.

We aim to report from the ground up wherever possible — from the labs, classrooms, workplaces, homes or communities of our subjects.

Detailed queries for features are especially encouraged. Please do not query without reviewing the magazine’s structure and recent content. Please provide links to published clips or writing samples. (You can flip through recent issues online at ISSUU, issuu.com/riceuniversity or view online here.)

  • For profiles and shorter pieces, a simple story summary and list of contacts will do.
  • We assign up to six months in advance of publication, but we pay on acceptance. Currently, we buy all rights, with some restrictions, to our stories.
  • We follow AP style. While we seldom buy photos from writers, there are exceptions.

If you have any questions before submitting a story idea or query, please write us: [email protected].
